As the nation prepares to celebrate its 244th birthday Saturday, residents and staff will be painting the communities red, white, and blue, with special meals, music, parades, and decorations.
The festivities range from a drive-through parade led by University of Georgia cheerleaders, to historical trivia contests, to all-American karaoke, as our residents get in on the Fourth of July fun.
Special Independence Day events are planned at many Arbor Company communities. Here’s a peek at what’s planned:
Barrington Terrace of Fort Myers (Fort Myers, Florida) is planning a picnic-style lunch, accompanied by a patriotic playlist created by one of the residents. The delivery cart will feature candy-coated popcorn in red, white and blue, and a specialty drink, with assistance from third-party provider Trilogy. The daily brain packets will feature patriotic-themed crossword puzzles, anagrams and trivia. Residents will help decorate the common areas and main lobby for the holiday, and they are also participating in a community art project, creating star door hangers to be delivered to the Memory Care Unit.
The Preserve at Palm-Aire (Pompano Beach, Florida) will feature an outdoor concert of patriotic music performed by Larry Stang. Residents can sit on their porches or open their windows to enjoy the concert. In addition, there will be holiday trivia, and a “Guess how many jellybeans are in the jar” contest. The bar cart will serve a fresh fruit yogurt parfait and ice pops. The evening meal will feature a choice of ribs or barbecue chicken.
At Arbor Terrace of Athens (Athens, Georgia), the celebration goes on all week, beginning with residents decorating fireworks license plates for their wheelchairs or walkers. On July 3, family members, motorcyclists and the University of Georgia cheerleaders will participate in a drive-by parade in specially decorated vehicles. Patriotic music will play as residents wave flags. Red, white and blue drinks and snacks also will be provided. On July Fourth, residents will play Independence Day trivia games with patriotic-themed prizes, and Independence Day-themed word searches and coloring pages will be offered. Lunch will have an All-American cookout theme, featuring Southern fried chicken; Coney Island hot dogs, Vermont cheddar mac and cheese, Georgia peach pie, and more.
The carts at Arbor Terrace East Cobb (Marietta, Georgia) will be decked out in red, white and blue, and residents will participate in a patriotic sing-along. In addition, the day will feature trivia games; sparklers; festive desserts; and red, white and blue car races.
On July 3, Arbor Terrace Naperville (Naperville, Illinois) will put on a parade of carts decorated by staff members. Residents can watch the parade while social distancing in their doorways. On July Fourth, a decorated snack cart will go to each room with fun games in which residents can win Arbor Bucks. Residents can also have their photo taken with an Uncle Sam picture frame.
At Arbor Terrace Fulton (Fulton, Maryland), there will be a full day of activities, including a special lunch with hamburgers; hot dogs; barbecue chicken; and corn on the cob. Residents will sing karaoke and compete in a game of “Name That Tune.” The snack cart will be decorated in Fourth of July style, and offer pigs in a blanket and novelty ice cream cones. The day will also feature a full schedule of window visits for families.
Arbor Terrace Morris Plains (Morris Plains, New Jersey) will have an all-around patriotic day, including a presentation about the history and meaning of Independence Day, available via video for residents to watch in their rooms. Red, white and blue props and patriotic music will accompany the day’s fitness activities, and a barbecue feast is planned for lunch.
In the afternoon, there will be socially distanced indoor and patio games, plus July Fourth-themed karaoke in each neighborhood. The snack cart will feature patriotic cocktails with sparklers and bagged snacks.
Family video visits and outdoor visits are scheduled.
At Arbor Terrace Roseland (Roseland, New Jersey), the Dining staff will grill Fourth of July favorites for Apartment Dining residents. There will be games, trivia and patriotic sing-alongs. The snack cart will be decked out in red, white and blue with banners and a flag, and will offer fun treats for residents. Everyone will be encouraged to wear red, white and blue, and patriotic hats and necklaces will be given out. The community will be decorated with banners and flags.
Window and video visits as well as outside social distancing visits will be scheduled.
