How to Find the Right Independent Senior Living Community

The Boomer generation has made a difference in each market they have entered, and senior living is no exception. Thanks to Boomers being specific about what they want senior living to look like—active, healthy, and fun—senior living communities no longer feel like clinical settings. Instead, senior living communities are vibrant and beautiful, with amenities that many people only experience during expensive hotel stays.

If it is time for you or your aging loved one to make a positive change in living arrangements, independent living is a wonderful option. Once you find the right fit, you will be surprised at the benefits you or your loved one will begin seeing right away.

What Is Independent Senior Living?

Independent senior living, or independent living, is an active community full of seniors over the age of 65. These seniors have their own apartments, and most communities offer a variety of options to choose from. Residents enjoy their own space and their own kitchen, while also benefiting from friendly neighbors and helpful staff just steps from their apartment.

Independent living communities are full of seniors looking for some peace of mind, as well as the option of attending a variety of activities or events daily. To be sure, there are a wide range of senior living communities that offer extensive care options. Communities with memory care, skilled nursing services, or assisted living also offer 24-hour nursing supervision, and are designed to cater to seniors who need more assistance or help due to chronic medical conditions. Independent living, on the other hand, offers access to nurses or caregivers, but those services aren’t typically offered overnight. Seniors who live in independent living communities are seeking companionship, activity, and access to amenities that make their lives healthier.

What Should I Look For?

Choosing an independent living community is an important task. Not every community will fit the needs or desires of every senior. You can make your search a bit easier by focusing on amenities offered, staff, and engaging activities.

Independent living communities offer a variety of amenities to their residents. While most typically offer WiFi access, the option to enjoy meals in a community dining room, and beautiful community grounds, exceptional communities offer even more. Look for amenities such as a swimming pool, wellness center, on-site medical services, transportation access, or walking trails. Steer clear of communities that do not offer amenities that you enjoy or that only offer amenities you are not interested in; opt instead for communities that give you the services you need to stay happy and healthy.

Staff members are another factor to consider during your tour. In addition to observing how the staff members interact with residents, take time to note what types of staff work in the community. Is the wellness center staffed with caregivers and nurses who could help you learn more about a new prescription medication? Does the activity staff include someone who teaches technology classes so that you can learn how to blog? Does the dining staff have a dietitian consultant to assure meals are healthy and delicious? These staff members are important to your quality of life, and it is worth getting to know key team members before you make your final decision.

Finally, ensure that the community has an active and engaging social life. Request a newsletter and event calendar upon your tour, and ask if you can attend a few activities as well. Look for activities that you already enjoy, as well as opportunities to learn new skills or hobbies. Inquire if there are trips, lectures, or even the chance to get college credit by taking courses in the community. If you find a community that suits your interests or intrigues you with their offerings, you could be on your way to making a decision.
