The Most Common Senior Living Questions We've Received Over the Last 30 Years

Serving seniors and their family members is our passion, and we are dedicated to providing reliable information and exceptional experiences to our team, residents, partners and friends. What started as a company based on the purpose to engage and enrich seniors now features thriving senior communities throughout the country. Even better, we are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year — what an accomplishment for our team members and residents! Tirelessly serving seniors, honoring individuality and preserving choice for three decades is no small feat. We are privileged to have the chance to care for each of our residents.

In 30 years, we have seen a lot and we have answered a lot of questions from concerned seniors and family members. Educating the general public on aging health, as well as busting stereotypes of typical, clinical “nursing homes,” is one of our favorite things to do. Here are just a few commonly asked questions we have answered over the past 30 years:

What’s the difference between independent living, assisted living, and memory care?

This is a question we hear often, and it’s no surprise: The senior living industry is full of technical jargon that can get confusing quickly. Arbor Company offers communities that serve different levels of care including independent living, assisted living and memory care. Independent Living features spacious apartments and fabulous amenities such as housekeeping and planned trips. Our Independent Living residents enjoy the peace of mind of having staff available for emergencies, but do not require extensive hands-on assistance for daily tasks. Assisted Living residents benefit from onsite caregivers around the clock, seven days a week, as well as three prepared meals served in a dining room. Arbor amenities, like an activity calendar chock-full of engaging events, are available to assisted living residents as well. Residents in Assisted Living typically have mobility or chronic medical challenges that make living at home unsafe or difficult. Finally, our Memory Care communities are designed especially for seniors living with dementia. Our staff is specially trained to anticipate and meet needs, as well as provide stimulating activities and a calm, homelike environment. We focus on dignity and independence, while always assisting residents with daily tasks.

When do you know it's time to move into senior living?

For most families and seniors, it is a question of right timing when it comes to moving into a senior living community. In our extensive experience, we have found that it is best to move before a major medical crisis. In an emergency or crisis situation, both family members and the senior are under stress, making a responsible decision more difficult. Indicators that it is time to begin looking at senior living options could include expressed feelings of loneliness, frequent falls at home, rapid weight loss, a diagnosis of dementia or chronic pain. Mobility challenges, inability to manage medications safely or problems with toileting (or other hygiene tasks) could also mean a move to senior living would be beneficial.

How much does senior living cost?

Our senior living calculator can show you how your current monthly expenses often end up costing more than a monthly fee for services at one of our senior care communities.

How’s the food?

We pride ourselves on having excellent, nutritious meals always available for our residents and guests. Our chefs work diligently to provide choice for residents, and to accommodate medically prescribed diets, all while preserving dignity for our residents with motor or memory challenges. You can expect menus featuring healthy options and down-home favorites to suit the variety of tastes we have living in our communities.

Will senior living help my loved one feel less lonely?

Seniors living at home alone can suffer emotional and physical consequences from perceived loneliness. Fortunately, living at a senior community can offer the support and friendships that the senior was not getting at home. Arbor prides itself on having a focus for engaging activities, offering the chance to learn new things, try new experiences and meet new friends.

How do I choose the best senior living community?

Senior living communities are everywhere, and trying to choose the best fit for you and your situation can be a daunting task. However, once you take time to tour a few communities in your desired location, you can determine which may be the best for you.
