At Arbor, we are proud of all of our dedicated staff members, but every so often, one will emerge as someone who truly goes “above and beyond,” whose dedication and hard work are truly inspiring.

That’s the story of Francois Belizaire, a caregiver working at Barrington Terrace of Naples. The community hosted a Nov. 21 celebration to announce that Francois had been selected as the 2019 Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) of the Year by the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP).  Among hundreds of nominations submitted from around the U.S., Francois emerged as the winning entry, thanks to his exemplary work ethic, professionalism and commitment to the quality of service for his patients. In honor of his award, Francois photograph appeared in Times Square in New York, New York!

“Francois has served our residents for nearly a decade, first as a hospice caregiver, and now as a full-time team member,” said Tammy DeCaro, executive director of Barrington Terrace of Naples. “He is compassionate, person-centered, and not only a caregiver but a leader.”

The annual award honors one CNA who provides exemplary services to the most vulnerable older Americans. Certified nursing assistants work in nursing homes, assisted living communities, adult day care programs, hospitals, home care agencies, hospice agencies, psychiatric facilities, rehabilitation centers, government agencies, associations and learning institutions.  Representing NCCDP at the event were Rhonda Brand, president, and Lynn Biot Gordon, chief operating officer, who presented the award certificate and the prize, a check for $500, to Francois. The Arbor Company also provided Francois with an additional $500 award.

DeCaro added that Francois was hired as lead resident care assistant in Reflections, a specialized neighborhood within Barrington Terrace for residents living with end stage dementia. That neighborhood has a long waiting list, largely due to Francois’ daily interaction with residents and their families as well as his experience in hospice. Families see the care that he provides and want the same for their loved ones.

In numerous letters of recommendation, co-workers and family members of residents praised Francois’ kindness, his work ethic and his calm demeanor.

“We’re eternally grateful that my brother is lucky enough to be cared for by Francois,” wrote one family member.

Michele Dowis, activity coordinator at Barrington Terrace, put it this way: “I have seen residents’ faces light up with joy when Francois is around!”
