6 Senior-Friendly Activities at Sugden Regional Park

Spring in South Florida is the ideal time for seniors to get outside and enjoy Florida’s abundant natural resources and recreation opportunities. Naples seniors who are looking for something a bit off the beaten path this spring should check out all the senior-friendly activities Sugden Regional Park has to offer. The park is open Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. until sunset and provides fully accessible parking and restroom facilities.

This beautiful waterfront park is located along the shore of the 60-acre Lake Avalon, which provides a centerpiece for the many recreation and relaxation opportunities within the park. Here is a look at some of the more popular features and activities seniors will enjoy at Sugden Regional Park and Lake Avalon.

Paved Walking Path

This 1.5-mile fitness trail is fully paved and perfect for strolling and chatting with friends or picking up the pace to get your heart pumping. The park’s lush green trees and abundant bird life means there is always plenty to look at along the way.

Freshwater Beach

Lake Avalon’s white sandy beach and clear water are a refreshing treat as the South Florida spring gives way to summer. Sink your toes in the sand, lie back and enjoy a book, or float for a while watching the clouds go by. 

Picnicking and Pavilions

Whether you prefer your al fresco dining under a tree or under an awning, you have several options available at Sugden Regional Park. Picnic tables and pavilions are available free of charge on a first come, first served basis, and pavilions can also be rented for parties and gatherings. To reserve a pavilion, call 239-252-4414.

Fishing

Bass and snook are two popular targets for anglers visiting the park. Whether you cast a line from the bank or from one of the docks, Lake Avalon’s shallow areas and deep drop-offs are sure to keep things interesting. 

Note: Florida residents over the age of 65 don’t need a Florida fishing license, but you should be prepared to show proof of age and Florida residency.

Boating

Boating and water sports are the most popular activities at Sugden Regional Park. Paddle boats are available to rent at the park and a large variety of boating and water sport classes are offered throughout the year, 

Though water skiing and stand-up paddleboarding may not be your thing, the Sailing Seniors class just might be. This class is a refresher for seniors with previous sailing experience, even if it was years ago. Beginner sailors and military veterans who want to learn to canoe or kayak can also take to Lake Avalon this spring. 

Annual Fourth of July Celebration

This popular free event at Sugden Regional Park kicks off with an ice cream social from 4-6 p.m., with food and beverages available to purchase. Entertainment starts at 6:30 p.m. and the evening wraps up with a fireworks display beginning at 9:15 p.m. Bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. No coolers or pets are allowed in the park on July 4.

Note: Only disabled permitted parking is available on-site during this event. Parking for all others will be available at nearby establishments.
