Happy birthday!

One is a social butterfly and the other one is the eternal caretaker, always asking others if they are OK or need help. Last month, Claire McGuire and Betty Cruckshank turned 97 and 96 years old, respectively, and the Barrington Terrace of Naples community wants to share their stories.

McGuire was born in New Jersey on Aug. 12, 1923, and was raised in a Catholic family. She still practices her faith and enjoys leading prayer with other residents. She dedicated her life to raising her seven kids, and has been blessed with 18 grandkids and five great-grandchildren.

Known for her great sense of humor, she likes to “make fun of everybody” she encounters around the community. Laughter, walking, reading and being nice to others are key to staying young, according to McGuire. In her book, a glass of red wine here and there, does not hurt either.

Happy hour at Barrington Terrace is where you may also find Cruckshank. The native of Laconia, N.H., is a former piano player whose all-time favorite song to play is “Fly Me to the Moon.”

“She’s big on crochet and likes to watch baseball on TV,” said Engagement Director Katharine Acosta. A fan of a good PB&J and grilled cheese sandwiches, Cruckshank enjoys the games and live entertainment provided at Barrington Terrace. When visiting, and given the chance, her daughter and son-in-law partake in the excitement showing their dancing moves.

When asked about her family, Cruckshank explains she is a widow, has three daughters, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

“My granddaughter Maya is a doctor,” the proud grandma points out.

Happy birthday, Claire and Betty.
