Renovation Update: Arbor Terrace at Kingwood Town Center

April 09, 2018

Hurricane Harvey was a scary event for the Kingwood, Texas, community. It  gave Arbor Terrace at Kingwood Town Center a chance to show our commitment to resident safety at all times and in all circumstances. Our property was devastated by the hurricane, but thanks to the diligent efforts of our caring staff, we safely evacuated all residents. Our residents moved to temporary communities, where we kept up with them and ensured they were thriving. But now, they’re coming home.

Arbor is a family. We value community, commitment, and compassion above all else. That’s why we’ve done everything we could to make this transition as smooth and safe as possible.

Hurricane Harvey: The Storm that Changed Everything

It started with a trickle of water into the first floor of our building. As team members worked to prevent water levels from rising, the generator came on, offering temporary power. We stocked up on non-perishable food, moved first floor residents up a floor, and prepared to support our community through the storm.

By 10:45 a.m. the next day, we knew we had to evacuate residents. An evacuation can be stressful, particularly for people who have lived here for years, so we worked together to provide emotional and material support. Our residents evacuated in boats, group by group. By the time the storm reached its crescendo, the building was surrounded by water. It was a grim scene, only partially captured in this photo.

Everyone got out safely, and the process brought our entire community closer together.  But by the time the storm was over, there was significant damage to our property. We’ve been steadily rebuilding ever since.

Arbor Kingwood Completes its Remodel

A few days before Christmas, we were thrilled to welcome our second and third floor residents came back home as we continued renovation of the first floor.

On May 18, we will have fully completed the renovation of the building. And as every Arbor resident knows, we never miss a chance to celebrate. On May 18th 4-7pm, we’ll celebrate our grand reopening in style. Featuring the sounds of the George Poe Band, Arbor will host residents and loved ones, offer tours of the new building, and serve up some delicious appetizers, followed by dinner and dessert. Visitors will even get a chance to participate in some of our residents’ favorite activities.

Taking Care of Residents No Matter What

In the hunt for the right senior living community, most families are focused on daily living—activities, health, safety, and socialization. Few think about what might happen in the event of a natural disaster. Yet a natural disaster can happen anywhere. Choosing the right senior living community can protect your loved one, buffer the effects of natural disaster-related stress, and even save lives.

Arbor Terrace at Kingwood Town Center is committed to a lifetime of health and care for our residents. So when they had to evacuate, we found other communities that could host them, or supported them as they moved back in with their families. We held weekly luncheons at our community center, and assigned each Department Head 20 residents to track. We checked in on them, updated them on on our plans, and made sure that no family had to deal with the anxiety of not knowing what would happen next.

That’s the Arbor difference: We’re a community, not just a business. And community members don’t forget about one another because they’re temporarily separated. Our staff cares deeply for our residents. They worked long hours, often at great personal sacrifice, to keep everyone safe.

No matter where you or your loved one choose to spend the next chapter of your life, we hope you’ll choose a community that offers this level of commitment.
