Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Guest Speaker Pearlie Harris

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. To recognize and honor this important cause, we participated in several events.

We started our morning by donning lots of pink and joining a Walk-A-Thon around the Dogwood area. Later, Pearlie Harris, an acclaimed educator, and activist stopped by to share her life story with us. Pearlie became the first black person and the first woman to serve as chair of the St. Francis Board of Directors. In 2011, The Pearlie Harris Center for Breast Health at St. Francis was named in her honor.

She was a former educator of 37 years and helped integrate African American children into the school system in Greenville, SC! Pearlie Harris was even recognized in Oprah’s most recent book, “Lift Every Voice,” which highlights stories from 50 influential, elder African Americans. Residents and staff alike were honored to be in the presence of such an esteemed woman!

The day ended with a themed happy hour with pink cupcakes and strawberry lemonade. The staff and residents danced the evening away, and our hearts were full, as Pearlie helped us see a deep connection between the past and the future.
