For many of us, September 11 is more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a day etched into memory. We remember where we were, what we were doing, and how the world changed in an instant. At Arbor Terrace Willistown, this day of reflection inspires us to honor those we lost, recognize the bravery of first responders, and carry forward a spirit of unity and compassion.

This year, the residents and Arbor Terrace staff came together to launch Hoagies for Heroes, a community initiative designed to show gratitude to the men and women who protect and serve us daily. On September 11, we prepared and delivered 70 hoagies—each one made right here at Arbor Terrace Willistown—to three local departments: the Willistown Police Department, Good Fellowship Ambulance & EMS Training Institute, and Goshen Fire Company.

What makes this initiative so meaningful is the hands-on involvement of our residents. From helping to assemble sandwiches to writing handwritten notes of thanks, residents poured their care and appreciation into every detail. For many, the event was not only an opportunity to give back but also a chance to stay connected to the community in a purposeful way.

“9/11 is a time for reflection and gratitude,” said Jessica Lopez, Community Relations Director at Arbor Terrace Willistown. “Our Hoagies for Heroes event is a simple way to show our appreciation to the brave men and women who are always there when we need them.”

This program was inspired by our community’s long-standing belief that strong communities are built on gratitude and connection. Over the years, we’ve hosted thank-you events for healthcare workers, supported local food drives, and reached out to veterans and service organizations. Each time, our community brings energy, compassion, and joy to these projects—reminding us that even small acts of kindness can make a big impact.

With Hoagies for Heroes, our hope is simple: that our local police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel feel seen, valued, and appreciated—not just on 9/11, but every day. And for the broader community, we hope this serves as a reminder that gratitude doesn’t need to be grand to be powerful. A shared meal, a heartfelt note, or a simple thank-you can go a long way toward strengthening the bonds that hold us together.
