8 Outdoor Activities for Senior Citizens Near Canton GA [Summer Edition] (1)

Canton offers the perfect blend of suburban and rural life. Nestled just 45 minutes outside of Atlanta, Canton affords the chance to spend your weekends taking in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, exploring Ponce City Market, or touring the Center for Civil and Human Rights. If you love outdoor living, though, there’s no need to leave home. Canton offers plenty of great options for seniors of every activity level and interest. Here are your best bets.

1. Silver Roamers Club

The Cherokee County Recreation and Parks Agency’s Silver Roamers Club is the perfect antidote to a boring retirement. This one-of-a-kind socialization group meets monthly to plan events. Members enjoy a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities, from cemetery tours and adult coloring to Braves games and concerts.

2. Cherokee County Master Gardeners

If gardening is your jam, join the Cherokee Master Gardeners. This offshoot of the University of Georgia Extension Service offers a wide range of benefits, including monthly gardening classes, plant swaps, and a font of gardening knowledge. Their annual garden sale is the best place in Canton to get native plants.

3. Chattahoochee Nature Center

The Chattahoochee Nature Center has something for everyone—an annual native plant sale, plenty of walkable trails, wildlife, educational seminars, and interactive exhibits. Take the grandkids for one of the Center’s kids’ days, or go on one of the Center’s evening river canoe trips. Gardening aficionados will relish CNC’s regular Dine and Discover meetings, during which you can enjoy a scrumptious meal while mastering a new gardening skill.

Think your days of competitive sports are in the past? Think again. Whether you’re a veteran athlete hoping to get back in the game or an amateur mastering an athletic skill for the first time, the Cherokee County Senior Olympics are for you. There are 15 different events and monthly meetings to plan for the big day.

5. River Tubing

The Chattahoochee, Georgia’s most venerated river, runs through much of the state. Canton’s tradition of “tubing the ‘Hooch” is a perennial summer favorite. Rent an inner tube, then relax as you gently float down the river. There are plenty of companies that can help you enjoy the river, each offering their own unique take on tubing.
