Every month on The Golden Gang Podcast, our host sits down with some of the most fascinating people who live and work within our communities. In this exciting episode, our compassionate Engagement and Activities Director shares her story and what led her to Arbor Terrace Morris Plains.Starting at just 16 years old in a local nursing home, Karen Bowman knew right away that she loved working with seniors. She began working in dining, where she helped serve meals and enjoyed placing special personal touches to each plate, such as candy or florals, to brighten their day. However, she quit her job soon after being told it was frowned upon to eat lunch and chat with the residents she served. Karen had a different idea of how care should be provided. Something more personal, thoughtful, and empowering.
That’s when she discovered an activities assistant position at another community in town. Immediately, the position piqued her interest, as she loved being able to work one-on-one with seniors and experience their growth and improvement firsthand.
From being noticed by community leadership for a promotion to continuing her education and becoming a certified activity director, Karen’s journey to our front doors was filled with determination and hope that the highest quality care is possible if we’re willing to roll up our sleeves and dive in.
