Between classy theaters, famed baseball stadiums, a nationally recognized NASA flight center, and quick access to the nation’s capital, seniors in Lanham, Maryland, know that there are many great things about living in this area. Furthermore, a range of organizations in the larger community that provide resources and activities focused on the needs of seniors also call Lanham home, helping seniors overcome new obstacles and plan for the next chapter of their retirement.

Whether you’re looking forward to stay social and active in the community or practical classes on financial planning and legal advice because you want to continue to live independently, there are plenty of resources online and down the street for seniors to explore. Wherever you are in your journey, here are some excellent resources, including some you may already take advantage of and some you may not have heard of before, but all of which you can explore from the comfort of your own home.

The Prince George’s County Aging and Disability Services Division

The Prince George’s County Aging and Disability Services Division provides a comprehensive series of programs and resources for seniors in the greater Lanham area. The Division’s staff is there to help navigate the many decisions that seniors face, but also to serve as the first resource you can turn to for help, ideas, educational programs, volunteer services, and other healthcare needs.

In addition to being a direct resource for the State Health Insurance Program, the Family Caregiving Program for loved ones, and wellness and health promotional programs, the Division also publishes an annual “Senior Resource Guide” for seniors looking to find specific resources.

The County’s Park and Recreation System

Prince George’s County has its own Senior Services programs, offering many activities to choose from. The program’s most popular programs include Club 300 and the Senior Green Team, but there are dozens of special events and recurring groups available for seniors, so you are sure to find one — or more! — that suits your interests.

The Senior Services programs also offer many signature events throughout the year, including an August Bingo-Fest, a Seniors on Stage program, and Senior Health and Fitness Days throughout May.

The Public Library System

The extensive Prince George’s County Memorial Library system also provides far more than just books and literature for the community, including to seniors. In fact, each library can help seniors and their loved ones connect with a range of educational programs, resources, and community services, not to mention media labs, special events, volunteering, and social events focused on a range of senior-specific topics such as healthcare and caregiving.

The best part? Many of the programs and services are free, and are presented in a nearby community location just around the corner from your home. Take a moment to review the library’s main website, or stop in to your branch and see which resources appeal to you.

Senior Activity Centers

The Lanham area, as part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) also offers six inviting senior centers, all of which provide recreational, educational, and professional services and resources for residents 60 years or older. For example, participants can take part in health programs, join in on daily meals, participate in trips, or meet with experts who can provide information or referrals about community resources.

Each center also offers access to the Maryland Access Point system, which provides confidential “one-stop shopping” to older adults and caregivers in the state who are looking for information, programs, and assistance specialists. Find the Senior Activity Center that’s closest to you.

Your Local Senior Living Community

Finally, another excellent place to find diverse programs, friendly and trained professionals, and plenty of resources in one convenient location is in a nearby senior living community. A senior living community can offer a safe, fun, and inviting community of caregivers and peers for you or your loved one to experience while exploring the Greenbelt area. One incredible community, Arbor Terrace’s Greenbelt location, has been serving seniors and meeting their unique needs for more than three decades, and we would love to show it to you.
