The Top 7 Activities for Active Seniors in Monmouth County (1)

Monmouth County, New Jersey, is a beautiful coastal area and a suburb of New York. Residents enjoy all the benefits of coastal living in a quiet town with the convenience of easy access to New York. The area is aging rapidly: More than one in six residents is 65 or older.

Many Monmouth seniors choose to move to independent living communities so they can enjoy more local attractions alongside like-minded seniors. No matter where you live or what you love, there’s something for you to do in this thriving county. Here are some great options.

Day Trips to New York

Monmouth County is about an hour away from New York city, so put a day trip to the big city on your to-do list. With endless shopping and dining options, you’re sure to find something—or many somethings—to do. Check out Central Park for some classic New York family fun.

Take in a Broadway show while you’re there, tour The Metropolitan Museum of Art, visit The Guggenheim, or stroll through The Museum of Natural History. If museums aren’t your thing, take the grandkids to New York’s iconic FAO Schwarz, which recently made a comeback.

Senior Center Activities

Monmouth County is home to a number of great senior centers, each of which offers a wide range of classes and special events. Designed to cater specifically to the needs of today’s seniors, these activity centers are hubs of senior life. They’re great places to meet people, get recommendations for a range of services, or pick up a new hobby.

Senior Clubs

Check out the many senior clubs in (or near) Monmouth. Seniors can play bridge, join fitness classes, and get help with rideshares. Or visit the Social Community Activities Network (SCAN), which offers trips, outings, and other special events for members 55 and older.

Special Events

A number of local special events cater to seniors. Check out Marlboro’s senior event calendar, which updates seniors on classes, events, and live performances year-round. Greg’s List posts a roundup of nearby activities, such as festivals, farmers markets, and musical events, each week.

Parks

The Monmouth County Park System includes a wide range of parks, including those with hiking trails, picnic areas, and waterfront views. Take the grandkids to a playground at the beach, have a picnic in a covered picnic area, camp out overnight, go fishing, and more.

Shark River Park offers an exceptional hiking trail and stunning waterfronts, while Deep Cut Gardens offers an incredible variety of flowers, including a stunning rose garden. Visit the Park System webpage for a comprehensive guide to park-related happenings this week.

Golfing

Golfing is a great way to stay active without risking serious injury. It also affords plenty of chances to commune with nature. Monmouth County is full of beautiful golf courses, including a number of public courses through the Monmouth County Park System.
