Once You’re Family, You’re Always Family: Christine’s Arbor Terrace Mount Laurel Story
3:23

Families often tour a senior living community hoping to find more than a beautiful building. They’re looking for warmth, real relationships, and the kind of care that feels just like family.

In a recent episode of The Golden Gang Podcast, Arbor Terrace Mount Laurel Business Office Director Phil Rizzo sat down with Christine, whose mother, Mary, called our community home for more than three years. Even after Mary’s passing at age 96, Christine has stayed deeply connected to Arbor Terrace, and her story says a lot about what makes this place special.

Finding the Right Senior Living Community for Mom

Christine’s mom, Mary, spent more than 10 years in assisted living. When it was time to move closer to family, Christine knew how important it was to find a place that felt more personal.

Mary wanted three things:

  • A convenient location near shopping (she loved to shop!)
  • A warm, welcoming atmosphere
  • People who truly cared

When Arbor Terrace opened, Christine and her sister brought Mary for a tour.

“She fell in love with Arbor Terrace Mount Laurel,” Christine shares. “Not just the building and brightness, but the people. The way staff interacted with residents and families was key.”

As someone who has worked in the food industry for 30+ years, Christine was also focused on dining. She was impressed by the quality of the menu and how our team made special accommodations when needed.

“If it wasn’t on the menu, they’d find a way to do something special for a resident,” she says. “That meant everything.”

Staying Connected—Even After Goodbye

Mary passed away at age 96, just before the Super Bowl. She was a devoted football fan and lifelong people person, so it’s no surprise that Christine felt drawn back to the community soon after.

“I came back because I missed the people,” she says. “I was here five out of seven days a week. Arbor Terrace became my extended family.”

Instead of stepping away, Christine chose to give back.

She made a large donation to help stock the Arbor Terrace staff food pantry, which provides extra support for team members who may need a little help. She also helped gather clothing and items to support executive director Punam Patel’s son’s nonprofit organization, and she’s a regular at community events like Trunk or Treat, showing up with treats and her trademark warmth.

“If you were good to my mother, I will take care of you,” she says with a smile. “This community took care of her like family.”

“Once You’re Here, You’re Family”

Today, Christine still considers Arbor Terrace Mount Laurel part of her extended family and she can picture herself here again one day, this time on the other side of the welcome desk.

“When I retire, I’d love to come back as a concierge,” she says. “I love people. I love talking. This place just feels like home.”

Her story is a powerful reminder of what senior living is about — community, connection, and continuing relationships that last long after a loved one is gone.
