The Golden Gang podcast once again opens the doors to Arbor Terrace Exton, sharing the stories of the remarkable people who shape community life. In this episode, Engagement Director and host Chuck Niccolls sits down with Neava Jagtap, a high-school senior whose passion for supporting older adults living with dementia began with someone very close to her.
Neava’s story starts with her grandfather—the person who introduced her to reading, writing, and art. When his health declined, she became determined to understand dementia and the science behind cognitive change. Her curiosity led her deep into research on neurodegenerative illness and neuroplasticity, but when she realized there was no simple cure, she shifted her focus to what could make a difference: meaningful, supportive activities.
Her search for a place to bring these ideas to life wasn’t easy. After being turned away by 15 senior living communities, Neava arrived at Arbor Terrace, where Chuck immediately recognized her passion and preparation. Soon, she was leading weekly art sessions with residents—a highlight of her week and a space where her ideas took root.
Wanting to broaden that impact, Neava launched a student club that now includes more than 60 teens who create artwork and cards for residents and local cancer centers. Through her nonprofit, Heartful Minds, she has raised over $10,000 for Alzheimer’s research, organized awareness events, and helped coordinate art donations to hospitals. One moment that stands out for her: watching a patient’s face light up after receiving one of 100 handmade cards.
Despite impressive research experiences at institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania and Fox Chase Cancer Center, Neava says her greatest teachers have been the residents themselves. Whether it’s a resident who jokes that shaky lines “add character” or another whose joyful spirit shines through memory changes, their resilience continues to shape how she sees aging and purpose.
Now preparing for college, Neava hopes to become a physician, researcher, and advocate for older adults and caregivers. She plans to continue her work at Arbor Terrace Exton while growing Heartful Minds and exploring new ways to blend science, creativity, and compassion.
