Staying active and engaged in physical fitness activities is critical for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. In fact, 26 separate research studies once found that there was a clear link between physical activity levels and cognitive performance. In one other trial, it was discovered that a year of aerobic exercise resulted in a small increase in the size of the hippocampus (the brain area involved in making memories), which turned out to be the equivalent of reversing one to two years of age-related shrinkage.
