The state of Georgia is slowly reopening, but thanks to the COVID-19 crisis, large gatherings remain unsafe. Most cities, Peachtree City included, have canceled or postponed Fourth of July events like parades and fireworks. That doesn’t mean you have to spend the holiday holed up in your house, without even a hint of festive celebration. These senior-friendly events can make even a quarantined Independence Day feel unique while connecting you to the people you love most.
Plan a Neighborhood Parade
You don’t have to brave crowds and the oppressive Georgia heat to enjoy a parade. Get your neighbors together for some socially distanced fun. Every neighbor can decorate their car, then drive through the neighborhood at a predetermined time. Enjoy greeting neighbors from their lawns and coming together as a community to stay safe while commemorating the nation’s birthday.
Head to the Pool
If you’re craving some time outside, beat the heat with a dip in the water. Kedron Pool and Gym are both open now, though you must book an appointment in advance. You’ll need to practice social distancing and arrive ready to swim, because locker rooms and chairs are unavailable.
Take the Grandkids on a Playground Picnic
It’s easier to practice physical distancing outside. Before the sun starts blazing by late morning, head to the children’s playground for an early morning play session and picnic with the grandkids. Make it even more fun by teaching them the favorite games of your own youth, or preparing a special family recipe for a meal to eat together when you take a break.
Celebrate with the Dogs
Your four-legged companion offers the perfect excuse to get outside and meet people from a distance. The Peachtree City Dog Park is open and charges just $1 per entrant. So take a picnic that you and Fido can share, toss a ball, and then go home to cuddle up for a blissful nap.
Join the Gathering Place
The Gathering Place is Peachtree City’s members-only senior center. It hosts year-round senior-friendly events and excursions, including meaningful and fun socially distanced outings. It’s the ideal community for seniors who want to meet people, get out of the house, and become more involved in their neighborhoods without investing a lot of money.
Plan a Socially Distanced Family Event
Can’t see your family in person? You can still celebrate together. Schedule a video call to reconnect. Scheduled events can take the awkwardness out of video calls. So practice ahead of time to make sure there are no tech glitches, then try one of the following:
- Share family stories, and then consider compiling them into an audio, video, or written family history.
- Make a craft together. This is a great activity for kids to lead.
- Share a family recipe. Each family member can make the meal from the recipe, then share their results on video.
- Watch a movie or a live virtual concert. You don’t have to give up family movie night just because there's a pandemic. You just have to be willing to be a bit more creative.
- Host a patriotic storytelling hour. Share tales of heroism and bravery, or interview family members who have participated in civil rights struggles, served in the military, or held a political office.
