We may still be months away from spring weather, but suburban Chicagoans have something warm and cozy to look forward to in February: celebrating Valentine’s Day! The holiday offers a welcome reprieve from frigid temperatures and icy streets, giving people of all ages plenty of reasons to get dressed up and head out on the town.

If you’re searching for some celebration ideas, whether it’s with your main squeeze or with your best friends, we’ve got the perfect list of ideas you can use to start your planning.

Head into the City

If the weather cooperates, you can take your date into the city to enjoy a good meal. RPM Steak is swanky and delicious, a splurge well worth it. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time. If you’re looking for another trendy spot to enjoy a meal, try Girl and the Goat or its less fancy sister restaurant, Little Goat.

After your meal, catch a show. The “Once on This Island” revival is in town until early February, or head downtown later in the month to catch “The Book of Mormon.” You can always choose a matinee showing as well so that you aren’t battling evening rush hour.

Stay In

If driving into Chicago has you dreading parking and traffic, consider making it a cozy night inside. Favorite local restaurants offer heart-shaped fare this time of year, including a heart-shaped stuffed pizza from Giordano’s or even a heart-shaped chocolate cake from Portillo’s. Add in a beautiful bouquet of colorful flowers, a movie on Netflix, and a new pair of comfy pajamas for the perfect night in.

Try Your Luck

For something different, head a few miles up the road to try your luck at Rivers Casino. You don’t have to spend much money to get a taste of blackjack or the slot machines, and you can even enjoy a delicious meal on-site as well.

Shop and Dine

For a daytime excursion, consider planning a shopping trip to Geneva, Illinois. About an hourlong drive to the west, Geneva offers small-town charm, delicious restaurants, and locally owned shops. It is well worth the drive, and may just become a regular part of your social calendar.

Get Artsy

Book a painting event at Bottle & Bottega, conveniently located on Touhy Avenue. You’ll learn how to create a piece of art for your home (and don’t worry — it’s easy, and the results are beautiful!) while you visit with other participants and enjoy a glass of wine.

Don’t Stay in Alone

Even if you aren’t celebrating Valentine’s Day this year, take advantage of some of the extra-special events happening all around you this month. Seniors who are connected and active are healthier and happier than their peers who don’t have a supportive network of friends.

If you’re struggling to find social events and activities to participate in, consider finding a senior living community that puts engaging events at the center of their community.
