One scoop at a time was how the residents of Arbor Terrace Citrus Park recently celebrated National Ice Cream Day, by mixing and tasting their favorite flavors in the comfort of their rooms.

All it took was ice, sugar, cream and vanilla or chocolate flavor, brought to their rooms in a cart. The gesture put smiles on the faces of residents who couldn’t believe that making ice cream would be so easy.

“This is cool, literally,” said one of the residents, referring to the fun process and the coldness of the bag of ice she was shaking to make her very own scoop of ice cream.

The activity was such a hit that many seniors asked for the recipe so they could do it again at a later time or even share it with family and friends.

“They were so thrilled that they made it themselves,” said Engagement Director Morgan Menard. “It blew their minds; it was so easy.”

Everybody in the community was able to enjoy the experience as directors made sure they offered sugar substitutes for those who requested it. And while seniors in independent and assisted living apartments concocted their tasty treats, residents in the Evergreen memory care neighborhood were treated to an ice cream-making demonstration before also tasting their favorite flavors.

National Ice Cream Day has been celebrated on the third Sunday in July since 1984, as a way to commemorate one of America’s favorite treats.

At Arbor Terrace Citrus Park, we easily predict that residents will not be waiting another full year before making ice cream again!
