Why live at Opus East Memphis instead of living at home?

Though aging at home sounds like a great option, it is not always the safest or best for remaining as healthy as possible—there are often issues with accessibility, socialization, isolation and overall wellness. Senior living communities like Opus East Memphis are specially designed with older adults in mind, to make sure they get the care and attention they need. Every last detail was built to accommodate seniors and their diverse needs. Opus also offers activities, events, and programming designed to help residents socialize and make meaningful connections with other residents and staff.

In addition, our team members are here, 24/7, to assist with tasks such as medication management, personal care tasks, or other services. They are already nearby or on site, and know each of our residents and their preferences. We offer independent living, assisted living, and dementia care, providing the support you need, when you need it.

Is Opus East Memphis a CCRC?

CCRC stands for continuing care retirement community. Residents in these types of senior living communities typically own the property in which they live, however they must pay large buy-in fees. These fees can range widely depending on the community, but as of 2021, the average entrance fee was $300,000. Residents also pay monthly fees which cover meals, utilities, maintenance, etc. In contrast, Opus is a rental senior living community, meaning residents rent their apartments or cottages instead. There is no buy-in fee, only a monthly rent payment. Both types of community are designed specifically for seniors, and include several levels of care, with the intention that they will continue to live in the community as their needs change.

How much does senior living cost in Tennessee?

According to Genworth’s Cost of Care Survey, the median cost of senior living in Tennessee in 2021 was $4,105 per month. The average monthly cost of senior living near Memphis was $4,200.

Does Medicare cover the cost of assisted living in Tennessee?

Medicare will not typically cover the non-medical care expenses associated with independent living or assisted living in Tennessee. Medicare typically only covers a short-term stay in a skilled nursing or rehabilitation community while an older adult is recovering from an illness or injury. It can also cover in-home rehab care performed by a home health nurse or therapist.

What is dementia care?

Dementia or memory care lifestyles, programs, and activities are specially designed for those with memory impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, or other forms of dementia. Dementia care can either be offered on its own or, more often, provided as a service in a separate area of an assisted living facility. Opus East Memphis’ dementia care program is meant to provide support, encouragement, and relationships for each of our residents. And it’s all backed by Arbor’s 30+ years of experience in dementia care.

How are dementia care services different from assisted living services in Memphis?

Both dementia care and assisted living offer supportive care to people with a range of health issues, including cognitive impairments. Memory care, however, caters specifically to those with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia through dementia-friendly activities and staff trained in the psychological and physical effects of cognitive impairments. To understand the key differences, you may find this post from The Arbor Company blog helpful.

What is the cost of dementia care in Tennessee?

Dementia or memory care costs are generally 20-30% higher than assisted living costs. Memory care can be an expensive commitment, but it's worth the cost. The average monthly rate for a memory care facility in Tennessee is $4,875, but pricing can vary widely depending on the location and level of dementia care that is needed.

What is the difference between independent living and assisted living in Memphis?

Both options can foster independence, ease caregiver stress and help seniors live longer, healthier lives. You can have your own private apartment or condo in each living arrangement, but there are also important differences.

Independent living at Opus is all about lifestyle preference—not a form of senior care. It can provide some peace of mind to seniors who no longer feel comfortable living alone, or who are looking for a more active community to call home. Independent living communities are usually more affordable, but unlikely to be covered by Medicare, Medicaid or insurance. Involvement with staff is largely dependent on your preferences, and this senior living option does not provide access to medical or nursing care.

Assisted living is a good option for people who are no longer able to live alone, but do not need intensive nursing care. Residents still enjoy privacy and independence, but help is available 24/7 with the simple push of a button, and our team members will assist them with basic life tasks. Assisted living typically costs more than independent living, but is more likely to be covered by long-term-care insurance, employee benefits programs and Medicaid.

What’s the difference between Opus East Memphis and a nursing home in Memphis?

Opus was designed to be reminiscent of home, offering private apartments and independence for our residents. In fact, some assisted living residents drive their own cars, cook some of their own meals, and come and go as they please. Senior living at Opus includes dining, housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, and all of the other world-class amenities that The Arbor Company is known for. Our staff is available 24 hours a day to provide help, if and when it’s needed.

By contrast, a nursing home (also known as a skilled nursing facility) offers more comprehensive support to those who have extensive medical needs in more of a clinical environment. They provide the highest level of care possible outside of a hospital, delivering 24-hour care to seniors who have complex medical conditions and need hands-on assistance and monitoring. Skilled nursing facilities are the best choice for those who need assistance with tasks that go beyond the activities of daily living.
